Matt Hugg got into nonprofit fundraising the same way many fundraisers have: accidentally. He took a job in a retail Boy Scout shop during a previous recession and before long found himself working as a fundraiser at a small college. He found his way to AFP as his career developed and he sought the local connections to other fundraisers AFP afforded.

Matt says AFP has helped him in different ways at different times in his career. In addition to learning about different aspects of fundraising, he says that attending the education sessions AFP offered was “a fine way to meet folks who held the same interest.” Later AFP helped when he was between jobs in identifying new positions, and then when he led a development office, he used AFP as a recruiting tool. Now, AFP helps Matt inform potential clients how his writing and executive search services can help their cause. Most of all, he says he enjoys the people. “Fundraisers are good, honest, dedicated professionals…I’ve made a number of personal friends through AFP.”

When asked why he felt it was important to give back to AFP through the Every Member Campaign, Matt answered simply, “It’s Fundraising 101. If you don’t support your organization, why should anyone else?”

Funds from the Every Member Campaign support a variety of initiatives, including scholarships, program development, chapter awards, diversity programs, and ethics education to name a few.
